Ingredients

  • 2 pounds sweet potatoes peeled and diced
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter to be browned
  • 1/4 cup milk whole milk or milk alternative
  • salt to taste
  • pepper to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon optional

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare and Cook the Sweet Potatoes

  • Peel and dice 2 pounds of sweet potatoes into evenly sized chunks. Place them in a large pot, cover with cold water, add a pinch of salt, and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Cook until fork-tender, about 15-20 minutes.

Step 2: Brown the Butter

  • Melt 1/2 cup unsalted butter in a skillet over medium heat. Stir and watch closely until the butter foams and turns golden brown, releasing a nutty aroma, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat immediately.

Step 3: Drain and Mash

  • Drain the cooked sweet potatoes thoroughly using a colander. Return them to the pot or transfer to a large mixing bowl and mash with a potato masher or electric mixer until smooth but slightly textured.

Step 4: Combine Ingredients

  • Slowly pour the browned butter over the mashed sweet potatoes. Add 1/4 cup milk to loosen the texture. Season with salt and freshly ground pepper to taste. If desired, sprinkle in 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon. Mix until well combined and creamy.

Step 5: Taste and Adjust

  • Taste the mashed sweet potatoes and adjust seasoning with more salt, pepper, or cinnamon if needed. Serve immediately for best flavor and texture.

Equipment

  • Large pot
  • Skillet or saucepan
  • Potato masher or electric mixer
  • Colander
  • Mixing bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Notes

  • Watch the butter carefully while browning to avoid burning; remove from heat once golden brown and nutty.
  • Drain sweet potatoes well and add milk gradually to avoid watery mash.
  • Dice sweet potatoes evenly to ensure uniform cooking and tenderness.
  • Optional spices like nutmeg, smoked paprika, or fresh herbs can add savory twists.
  • Store leftovers in airtight container in fridge for 3-4 days or freeze up to 3 months.
