Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground turkey (93% lean)
  • ½ cup panko bread crumbs
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • ½ to 1 teaspoon hot sauce (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon canola oil
  • 4 whole whole wheat hamburger buns or buns of choice
  • Thinly sliced or grated cheese
  • Sliced avocado
  • Other toppings of choice (tomatoes, lettuce, mayo or nonfat Greek yogurt)

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground turkey, panko bread crumbs, Worcestershire sauce, tomato paste, optional hot sauce, onion powder, kosher salt, ground black pepper, and egg. Mix gently until everything is well incorporated. Be careful not to overmix to keep the burgers tender.
  • Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each into a patty, about ¾ inch thick. Make a small indentation in the center of each patty; this helps them cook evenly and prevents them from puffing up.
  • Preheat your grill or stovetop skillet over medium-high heat. Add the canola oil to the skillet if you’re using one, ensuring it coats the bottom.
  • Place the patties on the grill or skillet. Cook for about 5-6 minutes on each side, or until they reach an internal temperature of 165°F. If you’re adding cheese, place it on top of the burgers during the last minute of cooking to allow it to melt.
  • Toast the hamburger buns lightly on the grill or in a toaster. Layer each bun with a turkey burger, followed by your choice of toppings like sliced avocado, lettuce, tomatoes, and a spread of nonfat Greek yogurt or mayo.

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Grill or stovetop skillet
  • Spatula
  • Meat thermometer

Notes

  • Leftover turkey burgers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • To freeze, place cooked or uncooked patties in freezer-safe bags, separating them with parchment paper.
  • Thaw in the refrigerator overnight before reheating or cooking.
